Open the Control Panel by clicking on the Start button then Settings then Control Panel. Or, if you are using the default Windows XP Start menu, click Control Panel (Settings does not appear). If, when Control Panel opens, you are prompted to "Pick a category," click on the "Switch to classic view" option at the top of the left column.

Double-click the System icon. (See Figure 9 or Figure 41).

What operating system do you use? Refer to item 41 for assistance in determining your operating system.

 
    Windows 95/98/Me  
      Click the Device Manager tab in System Properties. (see Figure 8a).  
    Windows XP/2000  
      Click the Hardware tab in System Properties then click the Device Manager button (see Figures 8b and 8c).

  Does a plus (+) or minus (-) symbol appear beside Network Adapters in the device list.

      The Network Adapter list is expanded and an Ethernet adapter appears in the list, however it has a black on yellow exclamation point or a red "x" on the adapter icon. Go to 21.
