| Connectivity Troubleshooting Guide for Windows Users | ||||
| 21. | Note:
If you have reached this point in the troubleshooting guide, it is
advised you seek technical assistance from a knowledgeable source. On the Device Manager tab of the System Properties, one of the following conditions is present: |
a) |
An Ethernet adapter does not appear in the Network Adapters list | ||||||
b) |
An
Ethernet adapter does appear in the Network Adapters list, however
there is a black on yellow exclamation
point |
||||||
| This indicates the installation of the Ethernet adapter was not completed successfully. There may be a resource conflict with another device in the system such as a sound card, modem, or even a previous installation of the Ethernet adapter. Often, the first unsuccessful installation attempt of an Ethernet adapter will result in the adapter being listed incorrectly under Other Devices on the Device Manager page of the System Properties window (see Figure 8a). Before attempting to reinstall the Ethernet adapter, any Ethernet adapters listed under Other Devices must be removed to avoid conflicts with any new installations. Go to 26 for instructions on how to remove a device from the Other Devices category. | |||||||
c) |
More than one Ethernet adapter appears in the Network
Adapters list. |
||||||
Note:
This applies only to multiple instances of Ethernet adapters. It
is not
uncommon to have multiple
Dial-up
adapters, Virtual Private Network adapters, AOL adapters, etc. These
should not affect the operation of a properly installed and configured
Ethernet
adapter. |
|||||||
If
you know what Ethernet adapter you have installed in your system,
you can remove
the other Ethernet
adapter
from Device Manager to try to resolve the conflict. Refer to item
26 for help with device removal in Device Manager. |
|||||||
d) |
In
the Properties window for the Ethernet adapter, the Device
Status indicates the "Device is not working properly." Updating
the driver for this device will occasionally resolve this problem, provided
no additional problems or resource conflicts exist. |
||||||
The
system must have an Ethernet adapter properly installed and configured
to function on the campus
network. You can remove
any "problem" Ethernet
adapters (refer to item 26 for help on device
removal) and reinstall the adapter following the manufacturer's instructions.
For additional
installation
help refer to question 11 in SFA's
ResNet FAQ. |
